Putting A Price On Jewellery | Part Two

Putting A Price On Jewellery | Part Two

This part two, I sat on, added to, procrastinated over for months... Going really in-depth, deleting, restarting and then finally publishing… I hope you enjoy my ramblings! - Nina x

Why is some fashion jewellery so expensive?

Why is our jewellery more expensive than others?

What’s the difference even though it looks the same?

In part one we highlighted the importance of taking into consideration Metals and Design when looking at the price of a piece of jewellery; in Part Two we are touching on some behind the scenes attributes which we hold in high regards to the production of our jewellery ~ Manufacturing and Values.

Manufacturing & Values

Part Two was originally going to be two separate sections of discussion… But I decided to combine these two points as in my eyes, Manufacturing and Values go hand in hand…

Having once been a ‘metalworker’, I used to spend most of my days on the factory floor buffing, polishing ect... And having experienced some questionable conditions during this time, it's now become ingrained in my own and Flash’s core values that we won’t settle for anything less than great working conditions; conditions that are safe, clean and regularly audited.

Holding these values in regards to manufacturing does impact the way our jewellery is produced; it takes longer, we have to work closer with our manufacturers, there are unforeseen delays (the joys!) and every small detail must be considered. However for the assurance that our pieces are being produced in an ethical, responsible, safe environment & for our values to be listened to & upheld, we do believe that the small, extra price you pay for the end result is 110% worth it…

Our manufacturers are a part of the international Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) and are regularly audited & monitored (BSCI & Sedex certification) which ensures protecting workers' rights, the standards & safety of working environments and the ethical, responsible business practices in our supply chain.

Contribution towards the RJC ensures our manufacturers have access to regulated industry guidelines & support facilities, thus enabling them to continue their commitment to providing the living wage to all workers, embracing diversity & empowering women in the workplace.

It is also so important to me that our jewellery remains to be made by hand - or finished by hand... This not only impacts the aesthetic, but is more meaningful. It’s like a little mini piece of art, each item being unique and no two are ever the same. It’s special. Which is what jewellery should be.

“Manufacturing lurks in the shadows behind closed doors, a competitive place where speed and price champions other aspects, like working conditions and wages. Upholding your values & including these in manufacturing decisions couldn’t be more important...”

So yeah...

Why is some fashion jewellery so expensive?

Why is our jewellery more expensive than others?

What’s the difference even though it looks the same?

I hope I have provided some insight for you into these questions!

Our main goal in this series was to bring value to you and raise attention to these aspects, so you, as a consumer can make better & more informed choices when buying jewellery (Even when it's not our jewellery!).

As always - please let us know if you have any questions or feedback, we love hearing from you.
